Happy Crust
A crumbling bread modelling
I managed this small interim project at home during my internship semester at Imagestorm and I had the goal to create a 3D model in a cartoony look to modernise an old logo of mine.
Created: May 2019
Client: Personal Project
Work: Concepting, Modelling, Texturing
Concepting
The template for the character design of my happy bread figure was the logo of my private YouTube account with the same name
Happy Crust from 2016.
My goal was to keep the quirky, lively look of the original in the 3D remake, while giving the figure a little more individual character traits,
for example by adding the bandana or the foot ring.
A great source of inspiration for the conception and artstyle of my work was the awesome
'Bread Warrior' 3D Model by Alice Druzga,
which I discovered during my design research.
Realizing
For the realization of my character I worked with Maya, as well as with Substance Painter. A timelapse video of the modeling and UV-mapping process can be viewed here:
Since I followed a rather simple flat artstyle for my character, creating a single diffuse texture was enough to create my desired cartoon look. So all shades and highlights result from the one texture.
This can be seen again very well in the final rendering with the in-house Sketchfab Shadeless Renderer. The outline of the 3D character was created at the end with the help of a little trick. I duplicated my finished 3D model, scaled it a little bit larger and inverted all faces. You can read more about my procedure HERE.
